It is good to see the Clubhouse busy once again at the start of another golf season. The Easter weather has been kind and the team competitions are off to a good start.
A new menu has been introduced by our caterer Michael Heaney with many of the old favourites and a few new combinations on offer. If you haven’t been up for a while, or if it’s your turn to cook dinner; call in for a bite to eat instead.
At the April Council meeting the Captain appointed Convenors for the year ahead, they are:
Harry Girvan – Match & Handicap Convenor
Stevie Braniff – Juvenile Convenor
Stevie Stewart – Social Convenor
Justyn Galloway – Bar & Catering Convenor
Owen Trainor – Greens & Facilities Convenor
Stephen Gray was elected to the position of Hon. Treasurer at the AGM in March and I entered my 3rd year in post as Hon. Sec.
Neil Farmer and David Ritchie will also be looking at how the Club admits, welcomes and inducts new members to the Club. We look forward to their report to Council and to implementing its recommendations for improvement in due course.
As mentioned in my Hon. Sec report at the AGM, the Council intends to keep the potential appointment of a new General Manager under review. During the 2019 golf season we will seek to operate Club functions through the expanded range of Convenors and with the Hon Treasurer and I taking on an enhanced staff management and oversight role. Terry Crawford will also line manage our maintenance supervisor Phil Gray during this time, on a temporary basis.
The staff team have been brilliant and have embraced the changes with enthusiastic goodwill in support of the Club Officers. On behalf of the Captain, Vice Captain and Council, I want to acknowledge their collective contribution to managing the business of the Club at this time.
On more mundane matters, can I remind members that we have some new bar and restaurant staff. They will know many of the regulars, but to help them avoid embarrassment and reduce the chance of miss-posting; please use your member cards when paying for food and drink. If staff know your number and offer to use that, be grateful; if they don’t, please be patient and understanding.
As members know, the kitchen at the Club is off-limits to all but authorised personnel. To ensure we respect the health and safety imperative behind this rule, I would remind all Members that they should never enter the kitchen area at the Club, for any reason.
In Michael Stanford’s absence there are a lot of team, new member and social updates that we’re keen to share with you. We’ll devise a plan to do so and will kick off a series of more regular briefs to keep you up-to-date with the life and times of Clandeboye Golf Club.
Enjoy your golf, keep it between the hedges and relax – it’s supposed to be a fun game!
